Academic Coaching
Academic coaching is for students who want to strengthen their skills and develop habits that will lead to sustained academic success. Coaching is customized to meet the goals of each individual student, but may include guidance with essential skills such as creating a weekly routine, prioritizing tasks, understanding course expectations, and preparing for quizzes and tests. Coaches can also assist with the navigation of class technology and will connect students with other campus resources to ensure wraparound support.
Power Up Workshops
Power Up workshops are interactive presentations based on the overarching principle of "study smarter, not harder." In a hands-on setting, students will learn practical and evidence-based strategies to become more thoughtful and efficient learners. Topics may include: Time Management, Active Study Tools, Motivation, Presentation Skills, and Library Research, among others.
Power Up Workshops can be customized for your class, club, or other group. Please contact Tami Drummond at tdrummond@springfield.edu to request a session.
Academic Progress Program
Students on academic probation are required to actively participate in the College’s Academic Progress Program. Students will be assigned an academic coach who will ensure they understand what is necessary for them to return to good standing, assist in monitoring their progress, and support them as they develop strategies for success.
Tutoring
The ASC offers peer tutoring in Math and Science, Writing, and Content Courses.
The ASC's Math/Science peer tutors are faculty-approved and meet with students 1:1 and in small groups. Drop-in availability is also available for select Math/Science courses. Please use TracCloud to schedule a Math/Science tutoring appointment.
The Writing @Springfield College Program is a collaboration between the Academic Success Center and the Department of Literature, Writing, and Journalism. Students may choose a peer tutor or a Faculty Writing Specialist to assist with any type of written assignment. Please use TracCloud to schedule a Writing tutoring appointment.
For courses outside of Math/Science and Writing Support, please Request a Content Tutor. You will be matched with a tutor who will contact you to set up an appointment.
*Please note: Our goal is to fulfill all tutor requests; however, there are instances when a match cannot be made. Students are strongly advised to put in requests as early in the semester as possible.
Supplemental Instruction (SI)
What is SI?
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is peer-led instruction that focuses on group collaboration and support for historically challenging courses in the Department of Biology/Chemistry. SI Leaders are students who attend class lectures and facilitate weekly 60-minute group study sessions in courses that they have successfully completed. SI Leaders utilize engaging activities to ensure peer-to-peer interaction, while integrating “what to learn” with “how to learn.”
