Why does an account get locked?
Account locking is a security feature designed to protect your account from unauthorized access, particularly from brute force attacks. Unlike disabling an account, which requires ITS action, account locking is temporary. If there are multiple failed login attempts within a short period, the system temporarily locks the account. This lock usually lasts around 30 minutes and is intended to prevent hackers from continuously guessing your password. After the lock period ends, the account automatically unlocks, allowing you to try logging in again. You can also manually unlock the account by following the steps further down this page.
If my account is locked am I getting hacked?
In most cases, a locked account doesn’t necessarily indicate a hacking attempt. Often, the lock occurs due to automatic login attempts using outdated credentials, particularly after a recent password change. For example, if a device like a tablet, phone, or computer is still trying to connect using the old password—such as when connecting to a service like eduroam WiFi—this can trigger the account lock. While it's essential to stay vigilant, these locks are typically caused by your own devices rather than malicious activity.
If you believe someone is trying to actively hack your account (e.g. you haven't recently changed your password or are pretty sure the above doesn't apply), then don't hesitate to email security@springfield.edu.
How do I prevent being locked out?
While account locking can't always be completely avoided, there are steps you can take to reduce the chances. After changing your password, make sure to forget the eduroam WiFi network on all your devices, then reconnect using the new credentials. This ensures that your devices aren't attempting to log in with outdated information. Additionally, if you use a password manager, be sure to update your password there as well to keep everything synchronized.
